Your New Puppy

Your new puppy is home today. Cute as a button, you shower it with affection, indulge its every move, take time out from work to spend every waking moment with it and basically spoil it. Why not, its time off from work for you to enjoy your new friend, after all you have been waiting quite a while for  this puppy  or you bought it on a whim? Perhaps the kids had been nagging you for one for ages.  What ever the reason, puppy is firmly entrenched in your arms, heart and home.

Joy is often short lived, especially when your puppy cries all night, screams when you leave it alone, poos and pees everywhere and generally turns your lives upside down. This behaviuor often leads to the most common complaint from doggy guardians - separation anxiety.

 Separation Anxiety

Puppies are naturally dependant on their mother and will then attach themselves to their new owners like any young child does to a parent. When left alone, they will howl inconsolably, scratch at doors and become destructive. This is normal behaviour as puppies are very vulnerable at this age.

I am often called upon to help people, whose puppy has become “a nuisance”, crying and screaming the house down when owners are off to work. People often create this issue, first by spoiling it with attention, then leaving it when they return to work for up to 12 hours a day on its own. This sets your puppy up to fail.
If you create separation anxiety, it becomes almost impossible to fix. Prevention here is the key to success.

There are some easy ways to stop this behaviour before it escalates.

  • When you first bring your puppy home, don’t over indulge it. If buying from a reputable breeder, ensure a blanket coming home with the puppy on it has its parent and siblings smells.
  • Start immediately to crate and toilet train your puppy. Teach it from day one that you can leave it alone for a short period of time and gradually build on that time away from home.
  • Enrol in puppy class IMMEDIATELY. Waiting until your puppy is 12 weeks old is too late. Puppies need to be in class from 8 weeks of age. This way you and your puppy get all the help you need to set you up for success. (Please ensure your puppy school is run by trained professionals, not vet nurses or schools that use negative training such as scruffing puppies or yelling at them as a bad puppy school can cause irreversible damage).
  • Interactions with your puppy should include a healthy balance of activities, training, play, alone time, sleep time, socialisation time with other people and dogs. Rewarding a quite puppy who sits by your side will teach your puppy to repeat the same behaviour. Patting a jumping puppy will only teach it to jump more.
  • Keep your departures and homecoming quiet and calm. Yelling out mummy’s home and making a fuss will cause your puppy to get upset and over excited. Teach your puppy that you’re coming and going is no big deal, a non event. If they get over excited, ignore your puppy until they have settled down, this means don’t look at them, speak to them. Go about your business until the puppy shows you calm behaviour, such as standing still looking at you.
  • Remember puppies grow fast and learn fast. If they can earn as they learn, have someone come and interact with them throughout the day such as a family friend or neighbour for a n hour, and who are put on environmental enrichment programs to keep them busy will do exceptionally well and become well adjusted family members.
Seei professional help and get your puppy into class from 8 weeks of age. Remember one puppy school is NOT enough for your puppies education. Training is ongoing for life. Puppies who have successfully come up through our classes are miles ahead compared to their friends who do one class and nothing else. If you have missed out on puppy school, dont despare, we are here to help and have many classes to suit your needs.
