home many trophy’s and prizes.

to take up a position with Australian Quarantine Inspection Services as
a detector Dog Handler. Worked with detection beagles at Tullamarine
International Airport.

and committee member for Keilor Obedience while living in Melbourne and

- Moved to Queensland where Positive Response Dog Training has been up and running since May 2005.
Dogs
are an integral part of family life and as their owners, we need to
take full responsibility for their welfare, education and care.
Dogs
that are taught in a cooperative manner learn quickly. It is
unneccesary to use electric shock, check chains or harsh corrections in
order for the dog to obey. A relationship built on trust and
mutual respect far outweighs one which is built on fear.

Dee’s philosophy
A dog is for life not just
for lifestyle. Positive based training methods mean that dogs are
taught in a cooperative manner to respond to commands. We set them up
to succeed in their learning and they are not punished for making
mistakes. We assume responsibility for our pets and in order for them
to be comfortable and confident in our world, they need to understand
us. We take on a leadership role, teaching the puppy to understand
social rules and a new foreign language, English.
Raising a puppy is a lot like raising children. Dogs are not children
but both need to be taught how to behave appropriately around the
family and the public, and to respect others. They need to be able to
understand rules and we need to provide boundaries and to set clear
consistent guidelines for their behaviour.
These are achieved by
learning to understand our dog’s language, (yes learning to speak
dog), and how dogs learn. Dogs don’t think like we do, they learn
by association. If we reward a behaviour such as our puppy sitting when
we want it to, either by food, a pat, smile, using a nice voice or
offering a toy, then that behaviour will increase. Reward based
training is humane, has no consequences and creates a strong life bond
between the pet and the owner.
